Boat Burning Day - The Dawn of a New Year!

Noon, January 1, at Greg's place

Our Norse ancestors taught us the way a boat should die: That which is made of things the earth to fly upon the waters must be released to the sky.

Boat builders are a romantic lot. We love possibilities. Sometimes, we try experiments that don't work out. Sometimes we make or inherit a boat that is gangly, unseaworthy, or dangerous. Sometimes we think something can be restored when it cannot - or should not.

Boat Burning Day is a chance for us to be responsible boat builders. When a boat has gone bad or is beyond repair, we must end its earthly existence with dignity, respect, and ceremony.

So go out to your backyard, garage, boatshop, or moorage and look at the boats you have. Let them talk to you. If there is one or two that need to cast off their earthly bounds, January 1 is the day to do it.
